the do sth. in try to do sth. can either be an intransitive verb or a transitive verb, which means the verb is not necessary followed by an object.
For example: she is trying not to cry; he tried to control his voice

the other one is a transitive verb, which is followed by an object.
for instance, try logging off and logging on again
